NORMAN – Oklahoma senior Julia Garcia Ruiz was named SEC Co-Player of the Week, the conference announced Wednesday. She shares the honor with Texas A&M's Lucciana Perez.
Ranked No. 60 in singles and No. 61 in doubles, Garcia Ruiz led No. 8 Oklahoma to a pair of SEC victories over No. 11 Vanderbilt (4-3) and Missouri (4-0).
The Morelia, Mexico native went undefeated in both singles and doubles, highlighted by a comeback 3-6, 7-5, 6-4 victory over Vanderbilt's Erin Pearce in a key match for the Sooners. She followed with a dominant 6-0, 6-4 win over Missouri's Korina Roso.
Garcia Ruiz also excelled in doubles alongside partner Salakthip Ounmuang, earning a 6-2 victory over Vanderbilt's Mia Yamakita and Erin Pearce before adding another 6-2 win against Missouri's Andrea Artimedi and Alex Ackman. The win against Missouri marked her 94th career doubles victory, moving her into sole possession of second place in program history.
Her all-around performance helped Oklahoma secure another undefeated weekend in conference play and extend its winning streak to 11 matches.
This marks Garcia Ruiz's third career conference player of the week honor and her first as a member of the SEC, after earning two Big 12 Player of the Week selections. She becomes the second Sooner to earn SEC Player of the Week honors this season, following Evialina Laskevich's recognition last week, giving Oklahoma back-to-back weekly award winners.
The Sooners will look to extend their winning streak Thursday when they host No. 2 Texas A&M at 5 p.m. at the Headington Family Tennis Center.
