OU Falls in Overtime in Hunt for the Crown

April 05, 2026 | Men's Basketball

LAS VEGAS — Looking for its postseason tournament title in program history, Oklahoma led by six points in overtime but lost an 89-82 contest to West Virginia in the College Basketball Crown championship game on Sunday afternoon at T-Mobile Arena.

The Sooners, who trailed by 15 points early in the contest but came back to take a 41-37 halftime lead, went up by seven with 4:19 left in regulation only to need a Tae Davis driving lay-in with 12.6 seconds left to tie the game at 76 and ultimately force the extra session.

Two free throws by Nijel Pack, another Davis bucket in the paint and a Pack one-handed runner off the glass on the right side put OU ahead 82-76 with 3:14 to go in overtime. The Sooners forced a missed 3-pointer with just under 3 minutes to go but failed to secure the rebound attempt. WVU capitalized by hitting a 3-pointer on an inbound play to cut the margin to three, before a blocked shot on OU's next possession led to a WVU runout and another 3 that tied the game with 2:16 remaining. The Mountaineers went ahead for good with their third straight trey with 1:23 to go, as OU missed its last five shot attempts.

Pack, who was named to the all-tournament team after averaging 19.7 points in the Sooners' three outings, recorded a team-high 24 points and a game-high seven assists against just one turnover against WVU. He went 4 for 8 from long range to finish his career with 436 3-pointers, 12th most in NCAA Division I history.

Davis was also key for the Sooners on Sunday and throughout the tournament, finishing with 19 points, six boards, three assists and two steals in the title game. He averaged 18.7 points and went 18 for 20 from the free throw line during OU's Vegas run.

Xzayvier Brown tallied 13 points and four assists in the title game and averaged 17.0 points and 4.3 handouts for the week.

Oklahoma found itself in a 26-11 hole 9:35 into the game, as eight of West Virginia's first nine baskets were 3-pointers. Senior guard Honor Huff went 5 for 5 from deep during the stretch.

The Sooners roared back with a 25-4 run over a 7:44 span to take a 36-30 lead with 2:28 left in the half. OU went 10 for 14 from the field during its comeback while WVU missed 13 of 14 shots during one stretch. Bench players Jadon Jones and Kai Rogers led the way during the nearly eight-minute stretch with six points apiece, while Pack and Davis contributed five each and Brown three.

Jones, in his final career game, made all three of his 3-point attempts on the day and finished with nine points and two rebounds in almost 20 minutes. Rogers, who played more than five minutes in a game just once in OU's last 17 games heading into the tournament, tied a career high with six points and set a career high with eight rebounds in the title contest, all in the first half. He also had an assist and a block in his 16 minutes.

After registering single-digit turnovers in each of its five most recent games, OU committed 14 turnovers against the Mountaineers and was outscored 26-11 off miscues. WVU also outscored the Sooners by 21 from 3-point range, going 15 for 33 (46%) from behind the arc to OU's 8-for-20 (40%) effort.

OU, which won eight of its last 10 games, finished the season with a 21-16 record, its third straight campaign with at least 20 victories. West Virginia finished 21-14.
