BELLEAIR, Fla. — Oklahoma Women's Golf fired the program's lowest round ever in a conference championship and the fourth lowest in school history on Saturday at the SEC Championship, moving up five spots on the leaderboard into second place with one round remaining before the field is cut to eight teams.
The Sooners' 8-under 272 was one shot better than Texas, which leads the tournament, and positions OU to make the cut to match play with a strong final round on Sunday.
The championship is contested over 54 holes of stroke play, with the top eight teams advancing to match play.
"I'm really proud of our team today," OU head coach
Veronique Drouin-Luttrell said. "We got off to a strong start, but really played well around the turn and on the back to move up the leaderboard. We're in a great spot heading into the final stroke-play round and know that we have everything in front of us."
The Sooners (-8) are two shots back of No. 5 Texas, but are in front of nine ranked teams and will enter the final round seven shots clear of the cut.
Senior
Savannah Barber (T4, -5) continued to lead Oklahoma, carding her second under-par round of the championship, a 3-under 67. Barber heads into Sunday three back of the individual leader. If she is able to complete the comeback, she'd be OU's first individual conference champion since Chirapat Jao-Javanil in 2014 and the program's sixth all-time.
Audrey Rischer (T9, -3) posted a 3-under 67 and shares ninth after 36 holes. The sophomore is hunting her second top-10 finish of the spring.
Senior
Reagan Chaney (T18, -1) led the Sooners in the second round, carding a 4-under 66 behind six birdies. Chaney is tied for 18th individually through 36 holes.
Gracie Mayo (T29, +1) carded a 2-over 72 and sits tied for 29th, while freshman Satongkan (Earn) Thiengsri (T76, +13) rounded out the lineup with a 2-over 72.
Oklahoma tees off Sunday in the first groups with Texas, who leads at 10-under, and Vanderbilt, which is in third. OU's first tee time is 7 a.m. CT.
No. 18 Tennessee, No. 16 Mississippi State and No. 8 Auburn share eighth place at 1-under par.
