NORMAN ā Oklahoma sophomore guard Aaliyah Chavez was named to the Preseason Media All-SEC Second Team Monday, as voted on by a panel of SEC and national women's basketball media members. Chavez was the only underclassman selected to either preseason All-SEC team.
Chavez enters her sophomore season after one of the most productive freshman campaigns in Oklahoma history. She was named ESPN and CBS Sports National Freshman of the Year and earned All-SEC second-team honors after averaging a team-high 18.4 points, 4.2 assists and 3.8 rebounds per game. She led all true freshmen nationally in scoring and ranked seventh in the SEC in points and ninth in assists.
Chavez totaled 625 points, the second-most by an OU freshman, and joined UConn's Paige Bueckers as the only freshman since 2009 to average at least 18.0 points, 4.0 assists and 3.5 rebounds per game while committing fewer than 3.0 turnovers per contest. She also set OU and NCAA freshman records with a 92.9% free-throw percentage, tying Oklahoma's all-time program record, and established an OU and SEC record with 62 consecutive made free throws.
A WBCA All-America honorable mention selection, Chavez earned SEC Freshman of the Week honors a conference-record eight times and was named USBWA National Freshman of the Week twice. She was a Wooden Award Top 20 finalist, a top-10 finalist for the Nancy Lieberman Award and appeared on the Naismith Trophy Late Season Watch List. Chavez scored in double figures in 33 of 34 games, including 12 20-point performances and seven against ranked opponents.
Also announced Monday, Oklahoma was picked sixth in the media's preseason poll, trailing South Carolina, Texas, Vanderbilt, LSU and Kentucky. The Sooners have finished fifth in the SEC standings in each of their first two seasons in the league. The conference's coaches' poll and All-SEC selections, voted on by the league's 16 head coaches, will be announced later this month.
Vanderbilt's Mikayla Blakes was named preseason SEC Player of the Year and headlined the preseason All-SEC First Team alongside Texas' Madison Booker, South Carolina's Joyce Edwards, Kentucky's Clara Strack and LSU's Mikaylah Williams.
Chavez was joined on the All-SEC Second Team by South Carolina's Tessa Johnson and Chloe Kitts, LSU's MiLaysia Fulwiley and Ole Miss' Talaysia Cooper.
The sophomore's selection marks the sixth consecutive year under head coach Jennie Baranczyk that Oklahoma has landed at least one player on a preseason all-conference team.
