NORMAN – Oklahoma women's basketball will take on reigning national champion UCLA in the 2027 Coretta Scott King Classic at Prudential Center in Newark, N.J., on Jan. 18, 2027, it was announced Thursday.
The Sooners will face the Bruins at 11 a.m. CT on FOX as part of the event, which will be played on Martin Luther King Jr. Day and honors the legacy and values of Coretta Scott King and the entire King family.
"We're excited and honored to be invited to play in the 2027 Coretta Scott King Classic in Newark," head coach
Jennie Baranczyk said. "The opportunity to represent Oklahoma on a national stage while honoring the legacy of the King family is incredibly special. This event embodies so much of what we believe in when it comes to leadership, education, service, and empowerment. We're grateful to be part of an experience that uses the game of basketball to inspire, bring people together and make a lasting impact."
The matchup marks a rematch of last season's Nov. 10 meeting between the Sooners and Bruins in Sacramento, Calif., where Oklahoma fell 73-59. The 2027 tilt will bring two of the nation's top programs together on a national stage, providing another non-conference test for Baranczyk and the Sooners.
"The Coretta Scott King Classic continues to bring my family's enduring legacy into spaces where young people can see, experience, and embody the values my mother held so deeply," said Dr. Bernice A. King, daughter of Coretta Scott King and CEO of The King Center. "Through the power of women's basketball, this event creates an opportunity to celebrate excellence while encouraging the next generation to lead with courage, purpose, and a commitment to community."
Oklahoma enters the 2026-27 season ranked No. 14 in
The Athletic's preseason top 15 following a 26-8 campaign that saw the Sooners advance to the Sweet 16 for the second consecutive season and make their fifth straight NCAA Tournament appearance under Baranczyk. Oklahoma returns seven players from last season's squad, including reigning ESPN National Freshman of the Year
Aaliyah Chavez and FIBA 3x3 gold medalist
Sahara Williams. Five additional returners who saw action in 2025-26 are joined by a seven-player newcomer class featuring three freshmen and four transfers.
