Deal Selected to SEC Softball Community Service Team

First Sooner Softball Player to Earn Award

NORMAN  — Oklahoma Softball junior pitcher Kierston Deal was named to the Southeastern Conference's (SEC) Softball Community Service Team as announced by the league office Tuesday. The community service team recognizes a student-athlete from every SEC school in their respective sport for work done in giving back to the community. 

Deal becomes the first such honoree in OU's inaugural year in the conference. 

A junior pitcher from Winston-Salem, N.C., Deal has volunteered her time with a number of organizations in the Oklahoma City area. Deal served as a Christmas holiday costume judge at the Remington Park Festival and was a jogathon fundraiser for Eisenhower Elementary as part of OU's Student-Athlete Advisory Committee. 

She has also worked as a lead team member and speaker with the Fellowship of Christian Athletes and has distributed food with Mission Norman. She has also worked with local youths in her hometown of Winston-Salem, N.C.

On the field Deal is 26-3 with a 2.34 ERA, 135 strikeouts and 170.1 innings of worked in 64 appearances. This season she spun complete game victories against No. 10/9 Tennessee and No. 3/2 Texas. 

The Sooners begin the SEC Tournament with a quarterfinals matchup against the winner of Mississippi State and LSU Thursday, May 8 at 10 a.m. CT in Athens, Ga.
