Alvarez Named SEC Player of the Week

April 02, 2025 | Men's Tennis

NORMAN -- University of Oklahoma men's tennis junior Luis Alvarez was named the Southeastern Conference (SEC) Player of the Week following two standout performances on the road.

The honor is the second consecutive weekly award for the Sooners.

Alvarez reappeared in this week's ITA singles rankings after picking up two wins at Ole Miss and Alabama. The junior's consistent success is clear through the numbers, where he boasts a seven-match win streak and 13 total wins on the season with eight being conference victories. Prior to the Ole Miss and Alabama matches, Alvarez had an impressive win over Georgia's then-No. 25 Thomas Paulsell, 5-7, 6-3, 6-1.Ā

In doubles against Ole Miss, Alvarez and teammate Kholo Montsi were one of two wins to provide the Sooners an advantage heading into singles. Two Sooners won singles points and Ole Miss evened the competition at 3-all, leaving Alvarez as the last Sooner on court. After winning the first set in a tiebreak, Alvarez dropped the second set but fought back to win the third set in another tiebreak to clinch the win, 7-6(5), 4-6, 7-6(4).

Oklahoma continued the road trip to face Alabama in Tuscaloosa just two days later. To start the match, OU dropped only the fourth doubles point of the season. The competition turned around when three Sooners claimed three straight singles points, but the Crimson Tide evened the match with two singles wins. Once again, Alvarez was the last Sooner on the court and took advantage of the opportunity to seal the win for Oklahoma, 6-2, 6-7(5), 6-2.
