Six Sooners Earn Podium Spots During Session III of Big 12 Championship

March 09, 2025 | Wrestling

TULSA, Okla. – Six Sooners carved out their spot on the podium and OU added a fourth NCAA qualifier during Session III of the 2025 Big 12 Championship Sunday afternoon inside the BOK Center.

Antonio Lorenzo (125) and Gaven Sax (174) placed fourth while Wilie McDougald (149) and DJ Parker (184) placed fifth. Juan Mora (285) finished in sixth place while Mosha Schwartz (141) rounded out the Sooner contingent with a seventh place showing.

As a team, Oklahoma finished in seventh place with 72.5 points.

"This tournament provided great experience for some of these guys," said OU head coach Roger Kish. "I think some of them learned a lot about themselves and gave us coaches a good idea of what adjustments need to be made in our training as we gear up for the NCAA Championships."

Lorenzo grinded out a tough win over North Dakota State's Tristan Daugherty, 4-2, in the 125-pound consolation semifinals. In the third-place bout, Lorenzo lost to Arizona State's top-seeded Richard Figueroa, 8-3.

At 174 pounds, a second period reversal propelled Sax to a win over Northern Iowa's Jared Simma, 2-0. It marked the senior's second win over Simma, a 2024 NCAA qualifier, this season. The St. Robert, Mo., native lost his third-place match, 6-4, to Iowa State's MJ Gaitan.

Third-seeded McDougald dropped a heartbreaker to Gavin Drexler (NDSU) in the consolation semifinal at 149 pounds (10-8). Competing in his fourth Big 12 Championship, the senior became the first Sooner to win a placement match, securing a fifth-place finish with a win over SDSU's Avery Allen, 5-2.

Parker was narrowly defeated by South Dakota State's Bennett Berge in a consolation semifinal at 184 pounds, 2-1. The redshirt junior was awarded the win in the fifth-place match over Iowa State's Evan Bockman via medical forfeit.

At heavyweight, Mora went 0-2 on the day with losses to SDSU's Luke Rasmussen (14-11) and Iowa State's Daniel Herrera (5-3) to take the sixth spot on the podium.

Facing a win-and-in scenario to qualify for the NCAA Championship, Mosha Schwartz prevailed in a high-scoring 141-pound seventh-place bout over Wyoming's Cole Brooks, 17-13. With the win, Schwartz punched his ticket to the national tournament for the third time in his career.
