Lacides Claims SEC Freshman of the Week Honor

NORMAN -- University of Oklahoma men's tennis freshman Oscar Lacides was named the Southeastern Conference (SEC) Freshman of the Week on Wednesday following the Sooners' home performance against the Georgia Bulldogs on Friday.

The honor marks the first of Lacides' career and the first of the season for Oklahoma.

Currently ranked No. 94 in the ITA singles rankings, Lacides had an impressive showing against Georgia's No. 31 Miguel Perez Pena. The freshman clinched the match for Oklahoma when he fought back from a 1-6 loss in the first set and won the second set, 6-2. In the third set, competition was close and ultimately came down to a tiebreak where Lacides saw victory, 1-6, 6-2, 7-6(3).Ā Lacides has picked up two ranked wins on the season and has 10 wins in his freshman campaign.

Lacides and teammate Bruno Nhavene defeated the No. 26 duo of Freddy Blaydes and Niels Ratiu in a dominant 6-3 showing to give Oklahoma their first of two wins in the doubles portion of the match. The Sooners have won 14 doubles points on the season and tally an 11- 6 record on the season.

The Sooners are back on the road to face Ole Miss on Thursday, March 27, at 3 p.m. CT before taking on Alabama on Saturday, March 29, at 1 p.m. CT.

The next home match for Oklahoma is on Thursday, April 3, at 6 p.m. CT where they face Texas in a Red River Rivalry competition.
