Wrestling Completes Day One of NCAA Championships in Philadelphia

PHILADELPHIA, Pa. – Oklahoma advanced all five of its qualifiers to the second day of the NCAA Championships on Thursday at the Wells Fargo Center.

The Sooners went 5-5 overall in Sessions I and II, including 2-5 in the championship bracket and 3-0 in consolation matches. Gaven Sax (174) and DJ Parker (184) won their opening-round matchups, while Antonio Lorenzo (125), Mosha Schwartz (141), and Willie McDougald (149) stayed alive in the consolation bracket.

Oklahoma is tied for 29th in the team standings. Penn State leads with 39.5 points.

Sax was the first Sooner to advance in the championship bracket, defeating Pitt's 15th-seeded Luca Augustine 5-0 in the first round. He then faced defending national champion and No. 2 seed Levi Haines of Penn State, falling 4-0 to move into the wrestlebacks.

Parker also opened with a victory, shutting out Wyoming's No. 19 Eddie Neitenbach in a 10-0 major decision. It marked Parker's second win over Neitenbach this season, having previously earned a 4-3 decision in November. The redshirt junior also notched his team-leading 14th bonus-point win of the season. In the second round, Parker battled Minnesota's No. 3 Max McEnelly but fell 11-3 after McEnelly secured two third-period takedowns.

Lorenzo, Schwartz, and McDougald all responded with wins in the consolation bracket to stay in the tournament.

Lorenzo earned his first career NCAA tournament victory with an 8-0 decision over Cal Poly's Koda Holeman at 125 pounds. It's the third trip to the national tournament for the senior out of Antelope, Calif.

Schwartz, a four-time NCAA qualifier seeking his first All-America honor, used three takedowns to defeat Pitt's Briar Priest 9-5.

McDougald extended his season in fitting fashion, defeating Michigan's Dylan Gilcher 8-5 in sudden victory. The senior improved to 6-0 this season in matches that extend beyond regulation.

UP NEXT

The third session of the 2025 NCAA Championships will begin Friday at 11 a.m. CT, which will include the championship quarterfinal matches and next two rounds of consolation bouts. Each match of the NCAA Division I Wrestling Championships will be broadcast live on ESPN and ESPN+.
