NORMAN — After hitting .455 with three runs, one double, two home runs, five RBI and 12 total bases last weekend, shortstop
Gabbie Garcia was named D1Softball Freshman of the Week and Southeastern Conference (SEC) Co-Freshman of the Week as announced Tuesday, March 11. Garcia joined Florida's Taylor Shumaker in earning this week's SEC Freshman of the Week honor.
Garcia is the first Sooner to be named SEC Freshman of the Week in program history. She earns the fourth weekly SEC honor for OU this season after
Ella Parker was named player of the week twice and
Sam Landry earned pitcher of the week honors after her perfect game at Baylor.
The Chandler, Ariz., native came up clutch on multiple occasions, helping the No. 1 Sooners sweep No. 10 South Carolina in OU's Southeastern Conference opener. She started her timely hitting with a go-ahead three-run home run in Friday's 10-9 win. In game one of Sunday's doubleheader, Garcia began the afternoon with a solo homer to center before finishing it with a walk-off RBI double. In the finale she put down a bunt that led to the game-winning run in a two-run first inning.
Garcia's homer in game two was the second in the middle of a sequence of back-to-back-to-back home runs. It also marked her fifth straight game with a home run, making her the first Sooner freshman to homer in five consecutive games since Jocelyn Alo did so in March of 2018. She also held things down on defense, converting all 11 of her chances in the field.
The Sooners head to Tulsa to take on the Golden Hurricane tomorrow at 5 p.m.
