NORMAN – Sixth-ranked Oklahoma women's basketball rolled to a 106-41 exhibition win over Oklahoma Christian on Wednesday night at Lloyd Noble Center.
The Sooners opened the game on a 19-0 run and never looked back, improving to 5-0 in exhibition play under fifth-year head coach Jennie Baranczyk. OU begins the regular season Monday, Nov. 3, at 4:30 p.m. CT when it hosts Belmont at Lloyd Noble Center.
OU shot 58% from the field, making 47 of its 81 attempts, while holding the Eagles to 30.6% shooting. The Sooners dominated the turnover battle, using 17 steals to force 30 giveaways that led to 46 points off turnovers while committing just 11 on the offensive end.
"I thought that Oklahoma Christian did a really nice job of running different things, which made us work through some things and build our chemistry," Baranczyk said. "Overall tonight was just really fun and I saw our freshmen really settle in and do some great things."
Junior Sahara Williams led OU with 18 points on 6 of 9 shooting night and added four rebounds. Zya Vann scored 16 points on an behind an efficient 6 of 8 performance and tallied eight steals, which would have set a Baranczyk-era high in a countable game. True freshman Aaliyah Chavez added 15 points, four rebounds and two assists, while preseason All-SEC first-team selection Raegan Beers posted a double-double with 12 points and 12 boards. Brooklyn Stewart was the fifth Sooner in double figures with 10 points, five rebounds and two blocks.
OU controlled the game from the opening tip, scoring on its first possession and never trailing. The Sooners led 27-4 after the first quarter and by 37 at halftime before cruising to a 65-point win.
Wednesday's contest served as the final tune-up for Baranczyk's squad before the season opener Monday against Belmont. Last season the Bruins won 26 games and finished as the WBIT runner-up.
Fans with tickets to the women's game are encouraged to stay for the OU men's basketball opener, scheduled for 7:30 p.m. against Saint Francis. Supporters can also enjoy $2 beer, soda and popcorn throughout the game. The first 1,000 fans in attendance for the women's game will receive a limited-edition Sweet 16 replica banner to celebrate last season's postseason run.
Monday's contest with Belmont will air on SEC Network Plus with Chad McKee and Pooh Williamson on the call. Fans can also listen on the Sooner Radio Network with Brian Brinkley and Carolyn Baker, or tune in to the Los Sooners Spanish broadcast.
