NORMAN – University of Oklahoma track and field freshman
Thobias Cheruiyot was named the Southeastern Conference Men's Freshman Runner of the Week, following his performance at the OSU Cowboy Preview on Friday.
The track and field 10,000-meter run school-record holder finished first in the men's 5K with a time of 14:57.2 in his first collegiate cross country race. It was the fastest 5K time by a freshman in the SEC last weekend. He is the first Oklahoma runner to win the Cowboy Preview since Liam Meirow in 2017.
After joining the Sooners in January 2024, Cheruiyot cemented himself in OU Track & Field history when he posted the sixth-best outdoor (13:51.73) and fifth-best indoor (13:56.12) 5,000m time ever recorded by an Oklahoma runner.
Cheruiyot's honor marks the track and field/cross country program's first weekly award in the SEC.
