NORMAN – University of Oklahoma head track and field/cross country coach
James Thomas and co-head cross country coaches Anna Bearss and Jay Weaver announced OU's 2024 cross country schedule on Monday.
The Sooners will compete in four regular-season meets before kicking off the postseason at the SEC Championship in early November, followed by NCAA Regional and National Championships.
"Our goal was to create a schedule that could compete at a national level while also making the most of the best regional opportunities," shared head coach
James Thomas. "Cross country differs from the regular track season because of the locations you visit, opponents you face and your performance in those settings are crucial for postseason opportunities. Our commitment to our cross country program remains a top priority to our staff."
Oklahoma opens the season at the OSU Cowboy Preview in Stillwater, Okla., on Friday, August 30. The women's team will then travel to the Texas A&M Invitational in College Station, Texas, on Friday, Sept. 13.
"This fall has the potential to be a very special season for the program. It's evident the women put in work over the summer and are ready to compete at a high level," stated co-head coach Anna Bearss. "Our schedule allows us to showcase what we're capable of and will provide opportunities for the ladies to be pushed to be the best they can be on race day. I look forward to the special moments and breakthroughs that are in store."
The men's and women's squads will reunite on Friday, Oct. 4 to race at the Joe Piane Notre Dame Invitational hosted in South Bend, Ind. The teams will split locations two weeks later, where the women will compete at the Arturo Barrios Invitational in College Station, Texas, on Friday, Oct. 18, and the men at the Wisconsin Pre-Nationals meet in Madison, Wis., on Saturday, Oct. 19.
"I'm really excited about the upcoming season. We've got a strong core group returning with some exciting newcomers. I think we're adding a whole new element to our team," added co-head coach Jay Weaver. "The schedule gives us the opportunity to travel to new meets and face off against some of the nation's best. It's going to be a fun and exciting season. I can't wait to see what we can accomplish together."
OU XC will race in its first SEC Championship on Friday, Nov. 1 in College Station, Texas. Following the conference championship, the Sooners will travel to Peoria, Ill., for NCAA Midwest Regionals on Friday, November 15. If qualified, OU will conclude their season at the NCAA Championships in Madison, Wis., on Saturday, November 23.
