WACO, Texas -- Garrett Buechele's RBI double in the ninth tied the game at four and Caleb Bushyhead's sacrifice fly provided the go-ahead run as the No. 7 Sooners rallied for a 5-4 victory on Friday to even the series with Baylor.
Buechele homered earlier in the game to give OU a 3-0 lead while Bushyhead turned in his second straight two-hit performance.
The win was the Sooners' first this season in 13 chances when trailing after eight innings and it helped OU reach the 40-win plateau in the regular season for the third consecutive year. The last time the Sooners accomplished that feat was in 1987, 1988 and 1989.
“Last year we came from behind five times, five times after the eighth inning and we won three ball games in extra innings,” said OU Head Coach Sunny Golloway. “That's eight wins, really, you are just pulling from defeat and putting in the win column, and you end up with 50 at the end of the year and that's what makes the year great. We haven't done anything to make this year great and it was time we got started.”
With one game remaining in the regular season, OU sits in third place in the Big 12 standings at 40-14 overall and 14-10 in Big 12 play. The loss ended Baylor's four-game winning streak and dropped the Bears to 28-24 and 12-14.
Down 4-3 in the ninth inning, Buechele delivered his fourth RBI of the game, on a one-out double ripped down the left-field line to plate pinch runner Erik Ross and tie the game at four apiece. The extra base hit was followed by a sacrifice fly by Caleb Bushyhead to plate pinch runner Elliott Blair and give the Sooners a one-run advantage.
The Bears' closer, Max Garner, who posted the save during Thursday's 4-2 win, took the loss on Friday after giving up two runs off three hits in just 2/3 of an inning. The loss by Garner spoiled a stellar outing by Josh Turley who struck out a career high nine batters in eight innings.
The go-ahead run in the ninth provided Bobby Shore (3-2) with the win, despite giving up the go-ahead run in the seventh inning. In the seventh, OU trailed for the first time as Josh Ludy's sacrifice fly to center field plated Chris Slater, who doubled to lead of the frame, to give Baylor a 4-3 edge.
The double allowed by Shore was the only hit he allowed in 2 2/3 relief innings. Shore was making his first appearance since May 1 at Texas. Senior Ryan Duke nailed down the save, his sixth of the year, with no hits and one walk allowed in the ninth.
OU jumped out to a 3-0 advantage in the fourth inning on Buechele's eighth home run of the year, a three-run shot to left field. It was the 29th career homer for Buechele (one away from tying 10th place all-time at OU), but his first since April 3 versus Texas Tech.
Sooners' starter Burch Smith had four strikeouts in the first five frames but ran into trouble in the sixth. After giving up a RBI single to Joey Hainsfurther, Smith surrendered a two-run homer to left field off the bat of Jake Miller.
Buechele and Bushyhead each had two hits and drove in all five of the Sooners' runs on Friday night.
The third and final game of the series is set for Saturday at 3 p.m. and will be broadcast on the Sooner Sports Network. KREF 1400 AM will carry the remainder of the game following OU softball's NCAA Regional game against Tulsa at 1 p.m.
